I suspect if you’ve read any of my posts about running, you may think I’m a tad odd. I run marathons for fun, after all. Well, they start out fun and then usually go off the rails along the way. I guess saying I run them for the challenge is a better way of putting it.
I also suspect there’s a chance you think I am a little bit of a nerd. After all, I write for fun. To settle the nerd question, I’ll let you in on a little secret: I carry a secret weapon to work every day in my backpack. Sound like a nerd?
OK, I’m not talking about the concealed handguns carried by the majority of South Carolinians. No, I carry a copy of Strunk and White’s Element of Style. I bet some of you are having unpleasant flashbacks to high school English right now.
If you’re not familiar with this little gem, Elements of Style is the classic how-to-write properly handbook. Every day at work, I craft many documents, from emails to system requirements. And so, as a nerd – a grammar nerd – I want to be prepared to consult ol’ Elements of Style in the rare event I’m not sure how to proceed grammatically.
Well, honestly I don’t have to pull Elements out of the backpack very often thanks to online grammar sites. I just feel better knowing it’s there.
